This Playing Techniques course, from Ralph Humphrey and Joe Porcaro, involves the study of everything pertaining to the proper technical performance of music on the drum set. The materials are presented in a systematic manner similar to a college course, which the authors refined over decades of teaching at Musicians Institute and Los Angeles College of Music.
Book Four contains more advanced exercise building on previous concepts: All sticking philosophies incl. Categories 1-6 applied to various time signatures and groupings; the remaining advanced rudiments and etudes; Ralph’s (and Mike Packer’s) Rudimental Challenges; advanced ostinatos and hand phrases; right-hand lead patterns; note groupings; hand ostinatos; rhythmic coordination; and quintuplets and septuplets.

About The Series
The Playing Techniques series marks the culmination of Ralph and Joe’s deep contribution to drum set education. I had the honor and privilege to work with Ralph as he completed all the material contained in the series before his passing. Playing Techniques contains 179 video demonstrations by Ralph. The videos are informal, full of incredible advice and playing and feel like you are sitting in class or a private lesson with him. Ralph’s final wish is for everyone to have access to this curriculum, and he was so honored to partner with Hudson Music and Drum Channel to make this a reality.
