The original Gene Krupa drum method book, published in 1938 at the height of Krupa’s popularity with the Benny Goodman Band, was a best-seller for the genre. Less known is Krupa’s second book from 1946 called “Gene Krupa: The Science of Drumming.” Though Krupa had musically dipped his feat into be-bop when this book came out, the work still focuses on rudiments, fundamentals, and easy marching solos.

The “jazz exercises” and the “progressive jazz exercise” within the book focus on stickings and the application of rudiments to soloing.
