BUDDY RICH TODAY, written in collaboration with Bobby Paul, presents a collection of contemporary solos and fill-ins as applied to the drum set. The solos and fill-ins in this book are based upon Buddy Rich’s interpretation of jazz and rock, and some are excerpts from his recordings. The book has been designed so the concepts can be used in any style and in any time signature. Many of Buddy’s fills and solos are at high level of difficulty, but the exercises in the book have been designed in a progressive, step-by-step manner to enable the drummer to execute them in any tempo, making them accessible to all levels of players.
The book is broken into four sections:
- IA. Drum-to-drum melodic rhythms in 4/4.
- IB. Drum-to-drum melodic rhythms in 3/4.
- IC. Drum-to-drum melodic rhythms in 5/4.
- II. Ideas based on a specific bass drum rhythm in 4/4.
- III. Advanced rhythmic studies, which are actual fills and solos performed by Buddy Rich.
- IV. Fourteen fill-ins recorded by Buddy, including the song, album and style of the recording.
Considered one of the greatest drummers of all time, Buddy Rich was the leading swing drummer, biggest drum celebrity, and best-known drum soloist of the 20th century. His impeccable technique, with the ability to play at speeds far beyond the reach of most professional drummers, was the stuff of legend. This book captures some of the magic of Buddy by breaking down some of the building blocks of his incredible playing.
Originally released in 1979, this book has been out of print and unavailable for a number of years until this re-release from Hudson Music.
