THe Odd Time Drumming Book, by Dave Lewitt, takes a practical and fun approach to learn odd times, covering 3/4, 5/4, 7/4, 5/8, 7/8, 9/8, 11/8, 13/8, 15/8, 17/16 and 19/16. Together, this group of time signatures cover much of what is used in fusion and progressive rock, and each time signature is explored with up to 36 different groove examples from easy to difficult. There is also a musical etude for each meter.

One of the most engaging aspects of the book are the real-world examples provided for each time signature on tracks from legendary artists such as Frank Zappa, Rush, Bill Bruford, Mahavishnu Orchestra, Led Zeppelin, Tool, Soundgarden, King Crimson, The Allman Brothers, Heart, Radiohead, and many more.

Audio demos of many of the transcribed artist grooves are provided, as well as a video for each chapter/time signature demonstrating various examples from the book. As with all books in Hudson’s digital format, you simply tap on an icon or example and that audio or video will play back from right within the book.

I hate eBooks. They’re never as accessible or easy to use as the concept is marketed to be. Having an eBook option is fine. Having it as the only option is terrible. I want a physical book that I can annotate, put on a floor tom or stand, and not worry about it. I don’t want to have an electronic device near my drum set that I then have to worry about damaging or falling over while I’m playing. These are obviously personal preferences, but I doubt they’re limited to me. That being said, the book is fantastic. Each of the different times signatures is presented well and in a logical, stepwise function—increasing difficulty through the rhythms. I’m particularly a big fan of the popular songs given for each time signature so that the learner can play along and associate these patterns with known (or easily searchable) songs.

For any drummer of any ability level who wants to break out of the heavily overused world of 4/4 time (with a little 3/3 thrown in now and then: in other words, most songs): Dave Lewitt’s book is for you. I always had a tough time playing beats in five, seven, and other odd meters. Now I find it effortless, after Dave’s book broke down all of the mysteries of odd meters. This book takes a step-by-step approach to initiate you into the world of rock solid odd-meter drums.
