Following up on his previous Hudson book DeLong Way to Polyrhythmic Creativity on the Drumset, DeLong covers new and exciting ground in this book designed for intermediate to pro level players. The focus of this book is the creation of expressive and musical-sounding phrase ideas, some of which are advanced and complex. Among the topics covered by DeLong:
- Analysis of classic examples of recorded works, including transcriptions, from greats such as Tony Williams, Vinnie Colaiuta, Billy Cobham, Manu Katche, Ian Paice, Billy Kilson, Gary Husband, and more
- Advanced ideas using 3-,5-, and 7-beat phrases
- Combining phrases and modulations
- Phrasing around ensemble figures
This book features 152 new audio examples recorded by DeLong to accompany the text.
Paul DeLong has performed and recorded with Kim Mitchell, Tom Scott, David Clayton-Thomas, and many others. He is a first-call drummer in Toronto for major theater productions such as Tommy, Hairspray, and The Lion King, as well as an in-demand session drummer for TV shows and jingles. Paul is also a faculty member at Humber College in Toronto, and the leader of his own group, The Code.
“Paul DeLong is a world-class drummer and educator,” said Hudson Music Senior Drum Editor Joe Bergamini. “I was knocked out by his first book, and this one is the perfect follow-up. Paul not only sheds light on complex phrasing ideas, but breaks them down in a usable way and provides practice material that will keep you in the shed and have you coming out sounding like a seasoned pro. The phrasing concepts presented in this book, when applied, will make your drumming more mature, musical, and complex, like the artists Paul analyzes in the book.”
